Rose, or Rosa canina, Rosa pimpinellifolia, Rosa arvensis, Rosa linnaeus and Rosa rubiginosa are also called dog rose, hep tree, hip fruit, hogseed, Scotch rose, wild briar, witches’ briar and sweet briar. It’s called rós in Gaeilge and ròs in Scots Gaelic. It’s thought that the latin name rosa comes from the German name for the flower called roese or rohese and the common name rose is a direct translation from the latin name. The rose is well known to attract pollinators to its vibrant, abundant and fertile flowers. Roses hybridize easily and there are a wide range of cultivated garden roses, numbering in the thousands as well as over 300 genuine species of natural rose.
